Behind The Scenes for Afashionfriend Editorial Shoot

Instead of posting about a specific product today I wanted to hare some behind the scenes pics of an editorial I shot yesterday with Amy Scheepers a talented photographer and has an amazing blog called

The shoot was all about textures and colours shot in Noordhoek with the Cactus as the background. I did hair and makeup and the brief was pale skin, brows and a dark lip. But to give it something more I went for the 2 tone ombre lip which really is one of my favourite looks.Afashionfriend5

Hair was textured using the amazing Bumble and Bumble Sea Salt Spray and Thickening Hair Spray blowdryed then tonged and added in Redken Mattifying Powder to give more guts to the hair plus lots of teasing.

Will share a full get the look once the shoot is out at the end of the month on

The Morning After pamper

Had a late night and feeling not at your best?  Drank too much? Then Sunday is the perfect day for a pamper and inject some life back into you and just basically make yourself feel good. So here is my take on the morning after pamper:

The Shower Pamper: I can spend ages in a hot shower after I have had a late night beacuse there is nothing nicer than feeling clean. Dove have launched their new range Purely Pampering and this Cream Oil Bourishing Body Wash will leave your skin feeling so soft and smelling amazing. Infused with caring oils and a touch of jasmine and honey you won’t want to get out of the shower in a hurry.

The Hair Mask: Philip Kingsley’s Elasticiser is a mask that you can’t apply if you in a hurry so your morning after pampering is perfect. This is the royal treatment for your hair, apply and leave in for 20 minutes before washing hair and you will have beautiful strenthened shining locks.

The Face Mask: Love this mask and all you need after a night of drinking and dancing is to get rid of all those impurities in the skin. The Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Peel and Reveal is perfect for this, apply and leave for 15-20 minutes and let this bad boy do its work and then peel off leaving fresh and beautifully clean skin ready for the rest of your beauty routine.

The Hair Oil: After washing your hair all you want is some shiney locks the Lee Stafford Nourishing Miracle Oil will add some moisture back into your locks.

The Skin Mist: Need to freshen up your skin after you have done your mask and basically bring back that glow I am loving Eminence Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist (sadly not available in the SA). Its a collagen boosting toner with a natural retinol alternative and swiss green apple stem cells. The Neroli Oil regenerates, hydrates and refreshes, the Coconut Milk moisturises and nourishes, the Coconut Water is PH balancing and infuses the skin with strengthening electrolytes, Vitamin C, Calcium, Potassium and Phosophurus. The natural Retinol Alternative lifts and tightens with collagen boosting ingredients firms and soothes the skin. The Swiss Green Apple Cells help delay the signs of ageing which is exactly what I need after a night out.

The Face Gel: The Clarins Hydra Quench cream Gel is an ultra moisturing gel that is supposed to be used when you have been in the sun but let’s face it you have been out drinking and sweating profusely dancing the night away I think the skin needs a bit of this to add back some moisture into the skin. With active ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid to ensure long lasting moisture, Katafray Extract to reinforce the skin and prevent dehydration, Sobier Bud Extract to reinforce the skins hydration and radiance, Pomegrante Extract to tighten pores, Apline Willow Herb Extract which helps reduce excess shine on the skin and Clarins exclusive anti pollution complex to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the environment.

The Moisturiser: Love the Khiels Skin Rescuer is an anti stress moisturiser so your skin has taken a beating and now it needs some love. Formulated with Rosa Gallica Botanical Extract and Mannose protects the skin, enriched with Chamomile to help sooth the skin and basically moisturises and balances the skin.

The Skin Booster: The Clarins Beauty Flash Balm is an old favourite of mine is perfect to add some radiance in a flash to tired looking skin. You can even use as a facial mask if you want so it has double value. A great way to pick up your skin making you feeling amazing. With soothing Bobisabolol to help restore the skin’s youthful glow, and Olive and Witch Hazel Extracts to smooth the skin’s surface. Its all about brightening and tightening in a flash!

The Lip Scrub: Got dry lips and want to add the moisture back in, the Lush Mint Julips Lip Scrub because mainly I love the smell and because it just refreshes the lips. Made with refreshing Peppermint Oil to help soothe lips and Sweet Vanilla Extract to lock in moisture.

The Hand Cream: The Sorbet Spa Hand Spa Escape Nourish Hand and Nail Cream is enriched with seaweed, complex rich in vitamins like Tangerine to give your hands a Vitamin C boost, minerals and Shea Butter to help put some love back in your hands.

The Nail Polish: Your ultimate Sunday Pamper has to finish off with painting your nails and I am loving the latest edition to Chanel part of the Summer 2014 collection launching this month. Its the 619 Pink Tonic and will add some colour to your hands.

Once you have brought yourself back to life sit on the sofa put your feet up and read the latest Grazia. What’s you morning after pamper?

Happy Sunday.

Mothers Day is just around the corner and if you are wandering what to get for your mum then here are a few ideas. Basically everything that I would love! And yes there are a few budget picks in there too:

1) Estee Lauder Lift & Firming Set R675.00 – A perfect set to treat your mum with to make her feel beautiful, includes eye cream, volume mascara, a lifting serum and a face and neck cream.

2) Jo Malone Lime Basil and Mandarin Home Candal R655 – I love the Jo Malone candles so if you just want to keep it simple but still want to spoil your mum with this amazing scented candal then this is a perfect gift.

3) Chanel le Lift R1500 – This is definitely a luxury gift and a product that I love so if you feeling like your mum is the best mum in the world and want her to feel totally utterly spoilt then the Chanel Le Lift is prefect.

4) Dolce & Gabanna Fragrance R780 – A fragrance is normally a perfect gift for anyone and this fragrance is in beautiful packaging and is a feminine mix of white flowers introduced by the feshmess of neroli leaves and the full bodied scent of White Amaryllis.

5) Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair R825 – One of my favourite night serums and definitely a treat for your mum to be able to her spoil herself and make her skin look amazing at the same time. Your mum will be waking up to beautiful skin every morning.

6) Rubybox R1000 voucher – If you really can’t think of what to buy a beauty voucher is also a good one then your mum can go spoil herself. Rubybox have beauty vouchers you can purchase maybe a R1000 is too high for your budget but you get my drift.

7) Ren Morrocan Bath Oil R425 – The Ren Morrocan Bath Oil is a great little spoil the whole range is absolutely stunning. The Oil nourishes skin and leaves it smelling slightly of roses, also helps relieve stress so your mum will be thanking you for making her feel relaxed.

8) L’Occotaine Ultimate Shea Collection R850 – This has been reduced in price so you can more for your money, a beautiful gift set consisting of hand cream, body cream, milk soap and foot cream so its a total spoil. Alternatively if its too much for your budget then you can invest in one of their amazing hand creams at R120.

9) Crabtree & Evelyn Rose Hand Therapy R360 – I love everything in the Crabtree & Evelyn store as they feel amazing but also smell amazing. The hand creams are a winner and a great treat to give as a present. This cream is enriched with the signature Evelyn Rose fragrance enriched with Shea Butter, Rosa hybrid and Rosa Gallica Extracts. The fragrance is uniquely scented with with Evelyn Rose petals and peach nectar, elegant jasmine and a violet accord, with accents of bergamot and amber.

10) Body Shop Cocunut Oil Body Scrub R130 – If you don’t want to spend much cash but want to show your mum you love her and appreciate her then the Body Shop scrubs are perfect. A great shower time spoil to make your mum feel and smell amazing.

I could go on and on for gift ideas but here is just a little inspiration. I know as a mum I loved to be spoilt too and beauty products they do the trick.

Pond's Flawless Radiance

Pond’s 7 Day Flawless Radiance Challenge and Giveaway

So the PR team for Ponds set me a big silver box and inside a load of goodies so that I could take part in the 7 day Pond’s Flawless Radiance Challenge. As well as me taking part they are offereing 2 kits to be given away too! The new range is all about brightening your complexion and helping you achieve flawless radiant skin.

The Pond’s Flawless Radiance 7 Day Challenge Kit is made up of 7 gift packages:

Day 1: This package is the care package filled with the Flawless Radiance collection which consists of a cleanser, toner, eye cream, serum, day cream and night cream. (I will post a full review by the end of the week) Also included is the Flawless Radiance BB Cream which I really love.

Day 2: Is the Get Fit Package with a pink skipping rope. Have to admit I haven’t used it yet because I have been so busy to execercise but its a great way to get fit and feel good about yourself.

Day 3: Is the destress package which I have to say is one of my favourite of all the packages its a Aroma Soothz Soothing Neckz Comforter, its a lavender heat pack that goes onto the shoulders and helps relieve aching muscles with the aroma of lavender to help you relax. This really comes in handy after a long day.

Day 4: Is the Beauty Boosting Food which I also love especially as I am trying to be healthy. Included is a dark chocolate bar as Pond’s say that cocoa helps reduce stress and results in less collagen breakdown of the skin. Eating chocolate is definitely a great way to destress.

Step 5: Love this step as its the Connect step as it included a Vide e loyalty card which I used with my sister and my mum plus I love Vida!

Step 6: This step is Get Confident where the challenge is to bake Vanilla cupcakes. I will be doing this step with my daughter now that she is on school holidays.

Step 7: This step is about Finding Your Inner Peace and includes a fridge magnet that has an inspirational quote:

So if you want to take part in this Pond’s Flawless Radiance 7 day challenge and want to win one of the 2 kit’s up for grabs then please mail me on quoting “I want to take part in the Ponds 7 Day Flawless Challenge”. The winner will be announced on Monday 7th April 2014.

Good Luck.

Michelle Lee Senior Pro Mac Make Up Artist

I was lucky enough to get some of Michelle-Lee’s time to give us an insider into her make up world, some tips and tricks and her fav products. I love following other make up artists and see what makes them tick and what products they can’t live without and what they recommend. I first saw Michelle-Lee in action last year at the trends technique workshop where make up artists, bloggers and beauty editors were invited to see what the new trends were and what key products were used. Michelle not only heads up the fashion show make up teams in SA but she also gets to go to the international shows and work amongst celebrity artists like Charlotte Tilbury.

So here is the Q&A:

1) What is your favourite part of being a make up artist?

The freedom to create and inspire others through transformation. Being a Pro Make Up Artist means Michelle has the opportunity to grow and shape aspiring or new make up artists skill level and hopefully elevate their make up journey. The feeling of making someone feel beautiful is a super power for me, this emotion ripples through both you as an artist and the client it can affect so much more than their appearance. Essentially I get to play every day and call it work.

2) What are your top 5 products that you can’t live without?

Mac Pro Long Wear Concealer because you can sheer it down with Mac Strobe Liquid or Luster drops to create a foundation.

Mac In Extreme Dimension Mascara because it literally does to your lashes what its name suggests.

Mac Black Track Fluid Line as its a long wearing eyeliner or eyeshadow and essential accross the board.

MAC 217 Eye Blender – I have 20 of these!

Mac Prep and Prime Face Protect SPF50 PA++ this primer grips to your make up like no other primer does with an added SPF of 50.

3) What backstage tips and tricks can you share with us from Fashion Week?

Less is more when it comes to skin. Apply foundation like a veil, sheer and natural, spot conceal the undesired blemishes. The base face is never a trend.

Powder precise hot spots only (oily)

Brushing the inner brows up and then gently defining the tail is a must – set with clear brow set.

4) What is your favourite trend look and what are the key products to recreate?

I am loving the Reb-elle AW14 look it will be big for this upcoming season. The look is rebellious, artistic and slightly anarchistic. All carbon and punchy rather than traditional pretty. Think black or blackened emeralds, plums and charcoal, I am obsessed with Mac Super Slick Eyeliner in On the Hunt. Apply this liquid patent finish to the entire lid for a high shine intense black attitude driven eye.

5) How do you prep a model’s face before applying make up?

My forever starting point will be the Mac Fix +, to hydrate and soothe the skin. I then cleanse the models with Mac Lightful Softening Lotion to remove excess residue and restrict pores.  Michelle says this is often a neglected step and makes a big difference to foundation application.

Her next step is to massage the Essential Care Oils into the skin. Depending on dryness and dehydration I may then follow this step with moisturiser. Mac Mineral Charged Water Power is my favourite right now for quick absorption and maximum moisture.

6) What is your skincare/make up routine?

Michelle says she is very indulgent in her skincare routine. So here are her favourite products to get the amazing skin that we always see her with.

I am smitten with the Mac Marine Bright formulations for defying dull complexions. For cleansing I use the Softening Lotion, then a spritz of refrigerated Fix +, the chilled temperature works wonders on restricting pores too! Mac Marine Bright Essence is my serum of choice for brightening and is complemented by one of my obsessions Mac Essential Oils to add clarity and radiance to my skin. Mac Prep and Prime Face Protect SPF 50 is a must to ensure make up lasts all day.

For make up here are Michelle’s key steps:

Using a Mac Contour Brush in 168, I apply a small amount of Mac Sun Rush Lustre Drops to the high planes of my face, cheekbones, brige of my nose, under my eyebrow and the excess is brushed down the centre of my neck and my collarbones. I then take a pea size of the lustre drops onto the back of my hands and apply the Pro Long Wear Concealer next to it and then mix the two together with the 168 brush, and buff into my face starting at the centre. I then use the undiluted concealer to conceal any areas that need more coverage around the nose and under the eyes and on any spots affected by pigmentation. I am all about highlighting and adding dimension to my face so my Mac Prep and Prime Highlighting pen in Light Boost is drawn under my eyes, centre of my forehead, bridge of my nose, cupids bow and the centre of my chin and then buff it all in with the 168 brush.

I set the centre of my face with the Mac Prep and Prome CC Compact (launches in March) in Neutralize with the 168 Brush.  Natural Bronzing is a new addiction for me. Mac Give Me Sun Mineralise Powder is then dusted along my hairline, under my cheekbones and along my jaw line. This adds subtle definitions and slims my face. Finishing touches to my prime look are my highlights with Mac Cream Colour Base in Hush. A backstage must and an everyday essential for me.

Here is a video tutorial featuring Michelle-Lee on Contouring and Highlighting:

So there you have it a great insight into Michelle and her key products. Of course I have the majority of these products in my kits and thanks to Michelle to sharing with us.

I will be going backstage in July to meet with Michelle and see her working backstage so watch this space.

I hope you enjoyed the post.

One of my friends asked me what do I want from 2014. It really made me think what I want this year to be and how I can im prove from last year or try new things for my work, my personal life and my blog. So I have been thinking what I would like to do and achieve this year.

1) On a work level I want to try and be really creative this year and try and shoot as much beauty as possible. For me I am in my happy place when I am painting a face and beauty shoots focus on the make up and the hair. My goal is to definitely to try and shoot beauty for more magazines I hit my goal at the end of 2013 and did my first beauty story for Elle magazine which is out now in the Jan/Feb issue so its a great way to start the year as well as Fairlady which is out next month. Make up is about experimenting and I want to push and go crazy.

2) Organise my beauty room is a must. Being a make up artist I am always buying new products but beauty blogging has taken it to a whole new level. My plan is to split the room into 2 and have my products I have bought and then have my beauty blogging products on the other side. I definitely need to get organised and get more beauty storage set up. My room will become my little office instead of trying to work when my kids and everyone else are running around.

3) For my blog I want to introduce more elements and have regular features like a mani monday and how to hairstyles. If there is anything you guys want me to include please let me know.

4) Video’s, video’s,video’s. I know I haven’t done enough as my schedule has been so manic but 2014 is going to be all about the video’s. From mid Jan new video’s shot in studio will be launched with a new promo video so its being taken to a new level. Plus I will be doing video’s with model’s and girls with all skin tones so I can show how to work with everyone. I promise at some point in the year I will start how to hair video’s.

5) On a personal level its all about being more healthy, drinking lots of water and trying to fit in exercise into my busy life.

Its important to set yourself some goals for this year. So have a think about what you want to achieve and go for it.

Shahnaz. x

What a year 2013 has been for me. I launched in February this year and its been an exciting journey for me. I am ending this year with a smile on my face. Thanks again for everyone that has supported me this year especially my beautiful husband.

I origionally started the blog to give tips and tricks to friends and thought it went hand in hand with what I did as a job and I love it. Its been very exciting and winning Best Beauty Blog was so amazing for me and I knew all the hard work and arguing with my family because they think I work too hard paid off.

I set some goals for the year and I so wanted to shoot for Elle and Marie Claire and with a lot of hard work and persitance it paid off. I did make up for my first Elle and Marie Main fashion editorial’s which made me so happy to see and I get to work with incredibly talented people. I so wanted to get into beauty and finally after a long wait my first Elle beauty story came out today for their Jan/Feb 14 issue and I just can’t stop looking at it. I have gotten to shoot with Elle loads this year and have had such fun doing it. I even got to quote earlier this year in the beauty section for grooming brows was nice to see my name in print.

My sister and I went into business together and after trying to decide what to do we went with importing jewellery from the UK to SA and launched an online jewellery store I love the brands and am so excited with what we have acheived so far and I got to style the jewellery on the December issue of Men’s Health Main fashion Big Night Out story as well as do the hair, make up and grooming! That was one crazy day.

One of my Men’s Health shots of the gorgeous Bailey made the cover of the 2014 Men’s Health Calender which was a great surprise for me and walking past Fabiani store and seeing one of my shots from the summer campaign full size in the window definitely put a smile on my face. I love what I do and I get very excited when I see the final image and know I chose the right career path.

I can’t wait for 2014 and hope it will be even better than this year apart from the fact I am turning 38!!!! Have an amazing New Year.

Much Love Shahnaz. x

So Christmas is over and you may have spent too much cash but to tempt yopu even more the online beauty sites are offereing some beauty deals. I have been searching the last few days across the different beauty sites in SA to see what beauty deals there out there to share with you and the best that I came across and with products I really love was on where they are offering up to 60% off. Oh yes that is some good discount. I also found some deals on that offer so many overseas brands. So if you have some money put aside or you just want to buy more beauty products because you are a beauty addict like me then check these deals out: : So here are a few selects from Rubybox but there are loads more deals and by far the best selection at really great prices.

I am a fan of Stila as you all know the Stila Masterpiece Series Eye and Cheek Palette has been reduced from R399.95 to R299.95 and there are 3 to choose from.

Crabtree and Evelyn have gorgeous sets and I love their packaging and their products on the Rubybox site I came across the botanical gel and lotion gift set reduced from R499.95 to R399.95. The set includes 3 ranges Citron Honey & Coriander bath, Pomegranate Argan and Grapeseed, Avocado, Olive Oil & Basil. Each range includes a 50ml cleansing bath and shower gel and revitalising body lotion.

Decleor Anti-Ageing Set was R1715 and is now R499 the best deal I found so far. The set is for the more mature skin so 35 plus the set is all about tageting dry skin and finelines/wrinkles. The combination of the set will energise your skin, plump skin to make it firmer and leaving skin silky soft. Included is the Aromaessence Iris Serum 5ml, Prolagene Lift and Firm Day Cream 50ml and Prolagene Lift and Brighten Cream 15ml.

Smashbox eyeshadows are also available on sale if you are a fan and always thought they were a little bit too pricey there are a few shades reduced from R194.95 to R79.95.

I also found a beautiful Urban Decay Palette I am a big fan of their make up. This set was R319.95 and is now R289.95 which is not a massive discount but its still a little deal. Included is 4 eyeshadows 3 of which are neutral and shocking pink shade, a mini brown eyeliner and a pink lipgloss so its a great set. : A great site offereing loads of brands. I came across some nice deals but there are loads more so go check it out.

I came across to gorgous Clinique travel sets. The first is normally R1570.94 reduced to R905.34 included is the 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula, Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild, Youth Surge SPF 15 Decelerating Moisturiser, Youth Surge Night Deceleraton Night Cream, All About Eyes Cream, Turnaround Body Smoothing Cream, Long Last Lipgloss SPF 15 in Cubana Crush and a round brush and mirror.

This cute little set includes Sunflower and Evening Primrose Eyeshadow in no 31 Bronze Brown and 36 Brun, 1 black eyeliner and 1 black mascara. : I didn’t find many on here that I liked but there are loads of perfume sets if you are a lover of fragrances. Included is the Restorative Day Cream, Super Restorative Night Wear and the Super Restorative Serum for a radiant complexion.
