Recently I attended the SkinCeauticals launch and one of the new products being launched is the Physical Fusion for the face. Being a make up artist you aren’t taught about sun screen products and a lot of think its OK to not wear sunscreen or stick oil over our bodies without a second thought on skin cancer and how it will damage our skin. Attending the launch totally opened up my eyes as I am guilty in the past of not wearing sunscreen especially on my face. But not only is it vital to wear sunscreen but when buying sunscreen you need to make sure you know what you are buying and that its actually going to protect you.
The key thing that I took away from the SkinCeauticals launch is that choose products you know and trust don’t go for a sunscreen you have never heard of or because its the cheapest. Sunscreen is expensive to produce that is why a good sunscreen is expensive.
When looking for a sunscreen here is what you should be looking for:
- Look for words like Broad Spectrum as this means the sunscreen has both UVA/UVB protection.
- The sunscreen needs to be both UVB and UVA a lot of sunscreens don’t have UVA protection and this affects the break down of collagen.
- Look for ingredients like Zinc this is a mineral protection. Normally the ingredients that are the top are the key ingredients so you want to see Zinc in the first 3 ingredients as well as Titanium Dioxide.
- If you are not sure on a product then Google it and do your research. As South Africa is a third world country some products are banned in other countries may be sold here so take caution.
- Understanding what the SPF’s mean so if its 15 SPF then it means you can go for 150 minutes without burning then you have to re-apply.
- Even if it says waterproof it doesn’t mean you don’t have to apply again make sure that you reapply the sunscreen
- SPF 15,20, 25 offers medium protection
- SPF 30 and 50 offers high protection
- Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun.
In my research I found this following diagram on how sun filters work:
Here are some amazing products and brands that I really trust and use on myself, on my kids and for shoots on location:
Skinceuticals Physical Fusion: This sunscreen for the face has just been launched. I learnt so much about sun protection and what I should look for in a sunscreen and Skinceuticals is at the mother of all sunscreens. This product has mineral filters which is a physical sunscreen and reflects the rays. It doesn’t irritate the skin and has no absorption into the skin and what I love about the Physical Fusion it has a tint but its a universal colour and when applied it mimics the natural skin tone. Its so light and has a fluid light texture which is amazing for the face as once applied it leaves no smears or marks and dries immediately so its great for men and women and its a 100% chemical free. Its water and sweat resistant and boosts radiance and can be worn under make up so lovely for the ladies and has an all day wear.
Nivea: This brand has always been a winner for me as its a brand that people really trust and a brand that focuses on the protection of kids. As some of you know I have 2 small kids that are outside a lot and are in and out of the pool. I don’t want to keep the sheltered and I want them to pay outside freely. I used Nivea 50 and they have never burnt and tI know their skin is protected and has both UVA and UVB protection. I have also Nivea Invisible Protection Transparent Spray on set as it doesn’t leave marks it dried imediately and it has both UVA/UVB protection.
Puiz Buin: I have personally always used this on myself and they have recently introduced their spray sunscreen which is much easier and less messy to apply and is also in my pro kit. We used the spray on my recent Men’s health shoot when we were on location up the West Coast. Puiz Buin also protects against both UVA/UVB. The brand is a worl leader in skincare and has been going for 65 years with so many sun care solutions and has created a perfect balance between the perfect tan and protecting your skin at the same time.
Eucerin: This sunscreen is another great one for the face and I origionally bought this for my pro kit. Its very high in UVA/UVB protection and helps protect the skin from long term acute and long term sun skin damage. This cream has DNA protection with Glycyrrhetinic Acid which supports the skin’s own DNA protection and repair mechanisms and cellular protection with Lichochalcone to protect skin against sun damage and free radicals.
Clarins: This brand is another brand I really trust as its been around a long time and plays a big role in giving back to communities in healing and how to care for themselves and also plays a big role in the beauty for women. Clarins has a large range of sun protection from 15 spf to 50+. I recently went to the Clarins launch and included was the Sun Wrinkle Control Cream for the face SPF 15 it also comes in 30. I love the smell and the texture and when applied leaves the skin glowing and can be used for all skin types. I have used Clarins skincare in the past and its one I would definitely recommend. This sun screen like all the others I have mentioned is reinforced with photostable and heat resistant UVA/UVB filters and also protects the skin against dehydration as well as helping with the physical signs of ageing.
Sunumbra Sport: This sunscreen is a natural sunscreen containing organic ingredients so if you are into products that are organic this sunscreen is for you. It has a 5 star UVA rating, high protection of Broad Spectrum and high water resistance. The sport sunscreen has been formulated for the active person outdoorsto ensure 40 SPF+ UVB protection and is water resistant for 40 minutes. This sunscreen is light and easily absorbed and also does your skin good at the same time plus they have protection for kids too!
There is so much information on protecting your skin and I may have missed some points but what is important and the message I hope to conver is that you must protect your skin and your kids skin at all times.
I hope you enjoyed my post. x
