Concealing 101

This week I am sharing some basic makeup tips this is the third instalment for the week. A lot of women I come across don’t even use concealer, its one item that is key in my personal kit and one that is key for my work. So in this post I am going to break it down for you on where to conceal on your face and the difference before and after. Concealer literally takes away the darkness, redness and any blemishes creating the illusion of flawless fresh looking skin:

Here is me with foundation and no concealer as you can see I suffer from darkness under my eyes:Here you can see where I have applied the concealer under the eyes, around the nose, at the top of the nose, around the mouth:Concealer 101 2Then blend everything in combining fingers and apply to cheeks to cover any pigmentation or blemishes and under the brow bone to create a more natural highlight:Concealer 101

Concealer 101 1Then add a bright lipstick and there you go a fresh looking face:Concealer 101 3Tips:

Go for a concealer 1 to 2 shades lighter than your skin under your eyes, around your mouth, under the brow bone and at the top of the nose to create the light effect, but when working around the nose and on your cheeks use the same shade to match in with foundation as you don’t want areas where there is redness or blemishes to stand out because its lighter than your foundation.

Remember your skincare is really important especially under your eyes, you need a good hydrating eye cream before you apply otherwise the under eye area will be dry and the concealer won’t blend in giving you that fresh look.

Products I used was the Rimmel Wake Me Concealer and the Mac Pro Conceal and Correct Palette.

I am absolutely in love with this new product from Smashbox. I wasn’t sure that a BB cream could act as an under eye concealer because BB creams are more sheer than a normal concealer. But as soon as I tested the Smashbox BB Cream out on myself I knew all my concens went out the window.

Smashbox BB Cream promises:

  • Fade dark circles instantly and over time
  • Reduce apperance of puffiness
  • Visibly smoothes fine lines and wrinkles
  • Noticeably improves fairness

Plus it has the same benefits as a BB cream in that it primes, protects, conceals, hydrates and illuminates.

I love the cream comes in a twist brush applicator so there is no wastegae of product and you can dot under the eyes and then blend in with your ring finger. Dark circles are definitely concealed straight away and the under area is illuminated and hydrated due to its creamy texture. I love the fact that under the eyes is instantly brighter and it doesn’t crease like some concealers do. I haven’t used it long enough to say it reduces wrinkles and datk circles but it definitely has immediate effects.

Sadly Smashbox BB Cream is not available online yet but you can get this bad boy at selected Woolworths, Red Square, Foschini’s and selected Edgars stores priced at R295 and available in 5 shades from fair to dark.

Benefit Fake Up Hydrating Concealer

I heard about the new concealer Benefit introduced, Fake Up and of course wanted to try it out as I heard such good things about it. I have been wanting to add new concealer’s to my kit, and to find a concealer for myself as I always suffer from dryness under my eyes when I am really tired. The great thing about this concealer is that its really hydrating and  I haven’t come across a concealer like this

There are 3 shades light, medium, and deep. Sadly there isn’t a shade for the darker skin girls so hopefully they will introduce at some point. What I really love about this concealer is that on the outside is a hydrating balm containing Vitamin E and apple seed extract  and in the middle is the concealer.

When I applied the concealer my skin under my eyes came to life plus it didn’t crease which is a big plus for me! The concealer felt really light on my skin and so soft because of the soothing balm around the concealer plus it took the darkness away which I have a lot these days! So many concealers on the market crease and leave the skin feeling really dry. The Fake Up Concealer for me is amazing! (It won’t suit everyone but if you suffer from dry skin then this is a must)

Sadly this brand was taken out of South Africa(boohoo) but good news you can still purchase Benefit from www.asos.com.

Hope you enjoyed the post. x

There are a lot of concealers on the market and it can become confusing on which one is right for you. Make up will never last all day even if its really expensive. The KEY to concealer and foundation is finding the right product for you and your skin type. Some girls struggle with concealer creasing more than others and no concealer will magically stop this from happening. However there are ways to get the concealer to last a little bit longer and using the right powder to set it.

For girls that struggle with creasing under the eye try opt for a concealer with a lighter consistency and not to use such a creamy concealer that is more than likely going to crease. Products like Touche Eclat that now have 7 shades or Mac Studio finish concealer are a good option . My favourite setting powders are either Mac Prep and Prime or Daniel Sandler Invisible blotting powder because they are light. Some powders are too heavy on the skin. Try opt for a translucent powder  (as seen in my previous post on how to prevent shiney skin).

Concealers that I love are Bobbi Brown  ( best across the board concealer) , Mac foundation sticks (especially for dark skin tones), Estee Lauder illuminating concealer (best for fair skin), Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage (magic and used by a lot of international make up artists), Touche Eclat by YSL is more of an illuminator will not cover really dark circles but can be used on its own or in conjunction with a concealer, Benefit Boi-ing concealer ( has 5 tones and is great for covering dark circles).

In my recent Elle main fashion editorial I created this look. The brief was fresh dewy skin with a pop of colour on the lip. Here is how I created the look:

Face: Moisturised the skin with Dr Haushka Rose Cream and then I buffed Benefit Oxygen Wow Flawless Foundation with my Real Techniques buffing brush. I concealed under the eyes using Clinique Airbrush Concealer.

Eyes: Applied Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study on the lid up to the crease, contoured the crease using Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Sable, then I went back over the paint pot with Inglot pigment in no 14 ,I filled in the brows using Mac eye pencils in Fling and Lingering and then applied Maybelline The One by One Volum’ Express in Black.

Contour and Highlight: I contoured under the cheek bone and jaw bone using the Smashbox Contour kit and highlighted above the cheek bone and into the temple with Mac Magically Cool Liquid Powder.

Cheeks: I applied Mac blush in Peaches.

Lips: I applied a Mac lipstick in Fusion Pink and then to create a matt effect I dabbed Mac pigment in Magneta Madness (neon pink) to the centre of the lips

Finish: By lightly duting Mac Prep & Prime translucent finishing powder on the forehead, nose and under the eyes.

Nails: Used Ciate nail polish in 3am Girl and then sprinkled multicoloured micropearls onto the wet nail and applied a top coat.

Hope you enjoyed the post.
