Its been a while since I have used the Mac Face and Body foundation but its one that I have found I am reaching for over this hot weather. There is nothing worse than foundation feeling heavy on my skin and this week with temperatures up to 37 degrees I want my makeup to be really light.
So many times I get asked what is best BB cream? Should I use a tinted moisturiser? What is a BB cream and a CC cream? What foundations should I use? What coverage is best?
Even though there is so much information online and in magazines I still find lots of women are still insure. But it also depends on how good your skin is, your skin type and what coverage you are looking for.
So here is the low down:
Tinted Moisturiser: This is a combination of a moistuiser and make up with a sheer coverage. This is a great product if you have great skin and no pigmentation and perfect if you are not a fan of wearing much make up but want to even out your skin tone. Its about the no make up make up look really.
BB Cream: A beauty blemish or beauty balm where skincare and make up are combined. There are a lot on the market from budget to expensive some with a more sheer coverage to a fuller coverage like the Avon BB Cream. This cream is a combination of a moisturiser so that skin is hydrated, a primer to keep foundation on longer, evens out skin tone the same as a tinted moisturiser, a sun protectant as quite a few of them have an SPF of up to 30, cover minor imperfections like redness and brighten up your skin. Some of the BB cream’s out there have anti-ageing properties as well and leave a beautiful glowing finish.
CC Cream: This is a step up from the BB cream where the focus is more on colour correcting and more foundation like qualities and with fuller covearge like the Bourjois CC cream I wear this just on its own. The CC creams focuses on evening out skin tone, dealing with redness like the Chanel CC cream, brightening skin and dealing with skin with pigmentation. However some BB creams and CC creams seem quite similar so you basically need to test them out and see what works for you.
Liquid Foundations: These come in dewy and matt formulations, from a sheer coverage to a medium coverage. There are so many on the market with some like a thin veil on the skin with that barely there look and some have illuminating qualities. Basically when you are looking for a foundation you want it to make your skin look natural, even out your skin tone and looking like you are glowing from within. If you struggle from oily skin then you most likely want to go for a matt foundation that leaves the skin feeling like velvet and beautiful or one that is targeted for oily skin that will usually say oil free.
Stick Foundations: These foundations normally have a fuller coverage and are amazing if you suffer from pigmentation or bad skin as this will definitely give better coverage and give a beautiful finish at the same time. I am a massive fan of the Bobbi Brown foundation as it covers beautifully and leaves skin looking beautiful.
Mousse Foundation: This is a lightweight texture with a sheer to medium coverage. Most mousses have matt finish and feel like you aren’t wearing much are better for combination to oily skin types and not for more mature skin.
Hope this helps and that you can decide for yourself which foundations you think you need.
Bourjois Radiance Reveal Healthy Mix Foundation
I have been waiting to try this foundation for quite a while and never got round to it. The reason I was so keen to try it was because its made by the same cosmestics house that makes Chanel cosmetics.
When I went to buy it and review it Edgar’s in South Africa no longer sold it so felt very frustrated because yet again another brand of make up has not been successful in South Africa. But happy days I found out that Clicks will be selling the Bourjois Foundations. Will keep you posted when. I am currently in London on holiday and went to Boots today and bought the Radiance Reveal Healthy Mix Foundation in no 56.
The foundation is supposed to give you skin a boost of radiance because its vitamin rich with a fruit therapy formula giving an even complexion and anti-fatigue result. So I put this to the test.
I love that the foundation is a pump so you don’t waste any. I applied the foundation after moisturising with my Real Techniques buffing brush. I have to say I love it. It definitely evened out my complexion and left my skin glowing and definitely looking radiant and I only had to use a tiny bit of concealer so it has good coverage. Not sure if it will last 16 hrs but I love it all the same. Plus it didn’t leave my skin looking really shiney. I am always tired because I have 2 small kids but it defnitely gave me a lift and I would definitely use this in my make up kit! There is not a full range of colours there are only 8 so sadly the ladies with darker skin complexions won’t be able to use this foundation.
Hope you enjoyed my post.
Fit Me Maybelline Foundation and L’Oreal Mascara Review
I am currently trying out all the drugstore/high street foundations and Mascara’s. Coming from London we are spoilt for choice but living in Cape Town my choices are limited. So I am on the hunt for foundations I can reccomend to people without them having to break the bank. S I thought I would try out the Maybelline Fit Me Foundation.
PR for Maybelline kindly sent me the foundation to try. Sadly it doesn’t have a pump so you have to carefully add some to the back of your hand. I applied the foundation with a my Real techniques brush and blended in. The foundation has a sheer coverage so if you have pigmentation or bad skin you will need a foundation with a heavier coverage. I liked the finish on my skin, it is very light and doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything at all and my skin felt smooth. It has a dewy finish but not too much so I didn’t need to add powder. However, it doesn’t last for hours so you wil need to reapply in the day.
The L’Oreal Volume Million Excess Lashes mascara has a long wand and its really bendy so its great for getting into the root of the lashes. For someone like me who doesn’t have much lashes it definitely gave me more volume!
Hope you enjoyed the post.
Creating a flawless looking complexion starts before you apply any creams or make up. You need to follow a beauty routine that will help keep your skin smooth that when it comes to applying foundation it glides over your skin. The key is exfoliating so as to ensure all the dead skin is removed. If you suffer from dry skin exfoliating is important as it will take the flakes of skin away. One of my personal favourites is Dermologica Daily Microfoliant its gentle on your skin but also great if you suffer from pigmentation.
Depending your skin type make sure you moisturise or apply a primer to your skin. So if you are like me and have combination skin I use a moisturiser before applying my foundation. If you suffer from oily skin use an oil free primer like Laura Mercier or Smashbox to slow down the process. If you have dry skin pick a really hydrating moisturiser like dr Haushka’s Day Rose Cream.
When choosing your foundation again it all depends on your skin type. My personal preference is a liquid foundation to really give a glowing finish and there are all different types out there so you need to spend time depending on your budget trying foundations out. Ask for a sample or take the tester and apply and go out into natuarl daylight. Make sure the colour matches your chest and blend down into your neck.
Depending on the type of coverage you want depends on the type of brush you use or work it in with your hands. Buffing brushes and stippling brushes are great for a lighter coverage . Then other foundation brushes will give a more medium/full coverage.
Concealer can be done either before or after applying foundation. I normally apply it after the foundation then I can see what areas need more coverage. My favourite is Bobbi brown creamy concealer but again choose one that you feel comfortable with and that works with your skin. Take a small concealer brush and blend in concealer under the eyes, around the nose and any areas that there is redness.
Finish the flawless look with a finishing powder. Personally I prefer the translucent powders but its all about personal preference as long as the powder you are using is the same colour as the foundation and not too heavy as it can go terribly wrong.

So I received a box of cosmetics from a new brand that has arrived in South Africa. Gosh is a trendy Danish brand that has been going for 25 years and will be sold at Edgar’s stores! As well as a cosmetic range they also have skincare and haircare products which I am looking forward to try out. Below is some of the products I got and tested.
The Natural Touch foundation was more matt in texture than I would normally use but it did leave my skin feeling smooth.
The liquid liner and black eye liner pencil I love. The pencil was very smooth and glided on easily definitely something I would use in my kit. I also really liked the mascara’s especially the Show Me Volume it made my lashes appear really full. I tried the mascara on my shoot today and it worked great it stayed on all day long and gave the lashes a lot of volume.
The dark pink lip gloss in the below picture packaging is great because it has a mirror on the side and when you open the applicator end has a light so you can apply in the dark. Great for nights out! I tested the lighter pink shade out today too on my shoot and really like it.
The Velvet Touch primer has the same texture as the Smashbox primer. I tried it out on the darker skin model in my shoot it left her skin feeling smooth and her foundation stayed on for hours.
The brow kit comes in nice packaging and it comes in 3 shades of brown and has a brow wax as well. I have yet to test it out but will definitely try on one of my shoots.
Once I receive the other foundations and shadows I will update you once I have tried them out.
Hope you enjoyed my post.
