make up tips

I love these colours for the eye and it gives the smokey eye a more modern and fresh feel over a black smokey that can be really harsh on some people. Here is a look I did for an evening out and the products I used:

photo-74 copy

For the face I used the Geogio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and buffed it in with my Real Techniques Stippling brush. I then highlighted with my Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand on the top of my cheek bones and contoured using the bronzer from the NYX Bronzer/Blush Duo in Ibiza and I used the blush from the Duo on my cheeks.

For the eyes I applied the Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyshadow in no 86 Ebloui on the lids up to the crease and then in the crease I blended the Mac Eyeshadow in Mauveless and winged out slightly and under my eyes. To add a little more pop I applied the Mac Pigment in Rushmetal on the centre of my lids and in the inner corners of my eye. I filled my brows to create shape with Mac Pencil in Lingering in just the areas where needed and applied the L’Oreal Volume Excess Lashes Mascara in black.

For the lips I wanted more of a stain effect so I dabbed the Mac lipstick in Amplified Watch Me Simmer Lipstick.

Touche Eclat and Mac Prep and Prime Highlighter

These are 2 amazing products that are key staples in my kit and that I definitely can’t live without. Most people think that these products are used as under eye concealers or eye brighteners but their real purpose is to brighten certain areas of the face. Unless you have no dark circles under you eyes you can get away with using the Touche Eclat under you eyes but in most cases you must use it to brighten certain areas of your face and still use a concealer.

Here is how to use the Touche Eclat:

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 19.50.40

Origionally the Touche Eclat only came in 1 shade now there are 7 which is great so more people can use the product. As well as an under eye brightener the Touche Eclat can be used in certain areas to lift your make up. The key areas for the Touche Eclat are as follows:

  • Along the bridge of the nose
  • Under the eyebrow
  • Inner corner of the eye
  • Outer corner of the eye
  • Along the smile crease line
  • Above the nose  on the forehead
  • Around the mouth to really make your lips pop when lipstick has been applied.

The Mac Prep and Prime Brighteners comes in 3 shades Bright Forecast, Light Boost and Radiance Rose.

These highlighters again are not in replacement of your concealer but to create definition after applying foundation and goes hand in hand with contouring. Use the highlighters in these areas to create beautiful definition:

  • Under the eyes in a triangle shape
  • Along the bridge of your nose
  • From the nose onto the foreahead into a triangle shape
  • Under your cheek bone
  • From under your nose to the top of your cupids bow
  • On your chin

Make sure once you apply these products with the bend you buff in the product to get the best effect. Will post a video soon on how to use.

Hope you enjoyed my post. x

I meet with a lot of clients and its always in offices and a lot of the time I notice women in the office aren’t wearing any make up or its been done in a rush so its not going to last. What we want its to look as fresh and pretty as possible and have a little pop of colour. I have created a look incorporating a fresh face, a purple gel liner on my eyes and a fresh pink matt lip.

Here is how to create the look:

  • Moisturise/Prime
  • I buffed into my skin Max Faxtor Face Infinity All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Liquid Foundation all over my face
  • I concealed under my eyes using Hourglass Concealer
  • I applied with a foundation brush Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector on the top of my cheek bones
  • For a little bronzing I used the smallest amount of the Stila HD Bronzing Beauty Balm and buffed under my cheek bones
  • For a little shimmer on the eye I applied with my fingertips the Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study
  • Along the lash line I applied with an angled brush the Macroviolet Fluidline Gel
  • I filled in my brows with Mac Brow Pencil in Lingering
  • For my lashes I applied the Gosh Boost Your Lashes Mascara
  • I lightly dusted on the apples of my cheeks Mac Sheertone Blush in Pink Swoon
  • To finish off the look I applied Revlon Super Lustrious Lipstick Matt Lipstick in Stormy pink.

You don’t have to use the same products exactly to create the look but gives you an idea of a fresh pretty look.

So June is almost up and even though I have a lot of product for my work I find each month there seems to be some new favourites. Because its winter here and I have pretty much lost my tan since my holiday there are certain products like bronzer  that I have been using on myself that help me feel a little better. Plus there have been some products that I have loved using this month for work:

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bronzer in Aruba: I  bought this product ages ago but having only recently started using this on myself so much so I have kept if for myself and not in my kit. I love the quality of this bronzer and that it has a little shimmer. It buffs in beautifully to my skin and definitely gives me a healthy glow all over my face which is exactly what I need.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Powder in 30: I can’t get enough of these powders and I definitely go straight to them when contouring. The no 30 has been the most popular one I have reached for as it gives a beautiful natural contour without it being too obvious especially when the make up needs to be more subtle. LOVE

Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation: What can I say this product is gorgeous. I love the consistency and how beautifully it blends into the skin. Its a sheer to medium coverage but you can build it up. The skin glows without looking too shiney and definitely gives a  flawless finish. Its a foundation that I defintely reach for when I am shooting for the magazines.

Anastatia Brow Gel: I recently bought these when I was in London from cultbeauty.co.uk. Some celeberity make up artists used it so of course I needed to have them. They come in different shades and I love the quality and how natural the brow looks when you brush the colour through. The gel also helps with the grooming of the brow and sets the hairs.

Mac Prep and Prime Base Lumiere: I am loving this base I bought it a month ago and have been using it on most of my shoots before applying foundation. It gives the skin a glow before applying and doesn’t make the skin too oily and its a great base for applying foundation and ensuring that the foundation stays on longer. I find when on a shoot I don’t have to apply any more foundation through the day.

Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand: I love this product its another one that I have kept for myself instead of going in the kit. Its a beautiful cream highlighter. I apply on the top of my cheek bones for a healthy glowing look. I just can’t seem to go without it.

Kevin Aucoin Celestial Powder: I bought this powder from Space NK. I am in love with it. Kevin Aucoin was a very famous make up artist  and before he died he launched his own brand. This product is amazing the quality is beautiful. I love this for a highlighter and its one product I can’t get enough of.

My Beauty on a Buget Pick: Catrice Cosmetics

Since searcing for inexpensive products in South Africa I came across Catrice Cosmetics which some of you may be happy to know are not tested on animals. I have to say I was pleased with what I found and the prices are great. Even when finances are tight we still need make up to make us feel a little bit better. These cosmetics certainly won’t break the bank. If you live in South Africa you can find this brand at Dischem.

So here are my  Catrice budget picks for the week:

Catrice Cosmetics

I really like the quality of the products. I haven’t tried them out on a photoshoot yet to see how they last and how they look against the lights etc but for every day they are good quality products that you can stay on trend with. I will definitely be including these items into a video tutorial so watch this space.

Hope you enjoy the post. x

MAC SS13 Trend Report

Sadly I missed the Cape Town Spring/Summer event last week where the key looks were demonstrated as I was on a shoot, but I have all the looks from the shows that Mac created. I have previously blogged about some of the key looks earlier this year as the shows were happening but if you only started following my blog here are the trends. There are 4 main key trends and here are the looks, the thought behind them and the key make up essentials:

Naturally perfected and luminous skin, super polished skin, mineralise moisture foundation has been buffed into skin, concealers used, minimal or no mascara, glowing skin using cream based colours like Shell and Luna, skin identical pigments in around the eye and skin is really hydrated. This look has a boyish beauty feel.

The key products: Mineralise Moisture FoundationSPF 15, Dirty Blonde Brow Gel Creme, Golden Elixir Strobe Cream, Mineralise Foundation/Loose, Poshtone Mineralise Rich Lipstick and Face and Body Lotion.

Clean popping pastels, modern romance with a fresh look. We are seeing colours like turquoise, lilac, lemon, mint, aqua, peach and apple. The inspiration is taken from seascaps to sunsets. A wash of colour on the lids, flashes of silver and cold metallics, a nod at the 60’s and a rounded eye shape. There is also a new view on the smokey eye with a transparent wash and a metallic sheen.

Key Products:  Wow mustard and Sunshine eyeshadow from Spring 13 Forecast/Eyes, Powder Blush in Poised to add warmth and contour, Lip Conditioner and Silver Pigment.Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 09.40.52 Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 09.41.023) SCH-DELIC:

New grade of colour blocking, hyper bright pigments, bold looks with skin that is light and luminescent, use of primary pigments. Graphic statements with a 60’s feel and where organic meets precision.

Key Products: Mac Pro Chromagraphic pencil in Process Magneta, Acrylic Paint in Yellow, Cyan and Process Magneta to give an eye popping edge, Auto-De-Bleu Technakohl Liner to portray the sea blues, Electric Red Pigment and Embrace Me Lip Pencil.

This trend is all about a gently applied and gleaming approach to bronze which defines SS13’s relationship with tan. The features are brought out in a palette of desert shades, with washes of cream colour adding a more sophisticated monochrome feel. We are seeing bronze with an almost aquatic effect. Golden Honey and beige tones, Sepia tones with blown out browns, buffed skin, a healthy reflective glow and tan relevant shades to accent the eyes and add warmth to the face.

Key products: Must Have Brown Eye Shadow from Spring Forecast/Eyes, Powder Blush in Taupe, Top Soil Eye Shadow Spring Forecast/Eyes, Mineralise Rich Lipstick in Luxe Naturale and Pigment in Golden Plane.

I love all the looks. The skin that has been created is so beautifully flawless. I am an even bigger lover of Mac Cosmetics. I will definitely be filiming some new video’s on how to create these looks. So stay tuned.

Hope you enjoyed the post. x

If you follow the hair and make up trends on the catwalk and magazines you will notice that 60’s make up and hair is back but with a modern twist.

You don’t necessarily have to go with traditional 60’s make up and use a black liner. I am loving the use of colour and the more graphic take on 60’s make up. The looks vary from a softer look to very bold brows with strong lines. So whether you are feeling bold you can go for the look as seen on Cara Delevigne to an eyeliner and a hint of peach.
The common feature in all these looks is flawless velvet skin with a bit of highlight and a slight hint of contouring. Getting the skin right is key for this look. Try a sheer foundation or a tinted moisturiser and apply a sheer powder to create the velvet finish.  Some of the looks are more complicated but with practice you can easily achieve your own twist on modern 60’s looks. If you don’t have full brows but don’t want them too bold brush your brows upwards and fill in to create the shape with a pencil like Fling from Mac and then set with a clear gel. If you alraedy have bold brows then just brush through with a clear gel.
Invest in a gel liner for the bolder looks and remember you don’t always have to go for black. To really make the look bold apply false lashes or individual lashes. Invest in decent brushes so you can create the perfect crease line.  Either go for a really nude lip if its a more graphic look or you can opt for an orange lip and lots of indiviual lashes.
For hair we saw modern beehives and side partings with bow accessories.
Hope you enjoy the post. X

My Beauty Picks of the Week

As well as testing out products on myself, I have been testing out products all week on my shoots. Here are my favourite products for the week:

Bourjois Bronzer: I love the packaging of this bronzer as it looks like chocolate and its pretty well priced. I have used my loads and it looks like I have barely used it. It has a great matt finish and really makes me look like I have a healthy looking tan.

Screen Shot 2013-06-16 at 17.23.08

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Powders: I have blogged about these powders. What can I say I LOVE THEM! I finally got to test them out on set. On my Grazia shoot I used no 20 to set the foundation and then used no 30 to contour the beautiful Morgan from Boss models. I am totally sold on these powders.

Screen Shot 2013-04-06 at 08.16.41

Mac Prep and Prime Highlighting Pens: I have these pens a while but for some reason I didn’t go straight to them on my shoots. I recently used one of them on one of my video tutorials on taking a day to night look. I love the way they give the face a pick me up and have great coverage. My skin instantly looked brighter. Definitely a winner for me.

Screen Shot 2013-06-16 at 17.33.09

Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer: I got this concealer in London. Sadly its not available in South Africa yet. Its an inexpensive concealer and in the past I have always used more expensive brands but I am really love this product. It makes the area under the eyes seem really bright and takes the darkness away and I love the creamy texture.

Screen Shot 2013-06-16 at 17.42.50

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation: I recently blogged about this new addition to my kit. I have been putting the foundation to the test and used it on my Women’s Health Shoot and my Grazia shoot. One of the models commented on how light it felt on her skin and on my Grazia shoot Morgan’s skin looked totally flawless when we were looking at the images on the computer. Absolutely am in love with this foundation.
