Makeup Tips

In this glowing skin makeup tutorial I wanted to show how important skincare is when it comes to achieving a glowing complexion. Without a good skincare routine makeup will never look dewy so its key you exfoliate, apply masks and the rest. I chat about a great hydsrating masks, facial oils and basically layer up that skincare before I even get to the makeup part. This look is perfect for those of you who don’t like to wear loads of makeup but want to look heathy. Its also a great look for day time as its super fresh and polished.

It seems I can never get enough of an eyeshadow palette. Everytime I buy one or get one from one of the PR companies its like Christmas has come early. I am totally loving the new Body Shop Down To Earth palettes that come in a whole variety of shades.  I got my hands on this grey shadow palette in no 3 which is a combination of grey’s. The best way for me to test out products is or on a shoot so that’s what I did. I did a beauty portrait shoot with 5 gorgeous girls and for the palette I created a smokey eye on Janke.

This season its all about masculine suits for women with a touch of a feminine touch thrown in. If you are embracing the masculine trend then its important to add the makeup to have a little contrast with the clothes. In this Elle magazine fashion editorial I did the makeup but had both girls but giving them both a different look that should inspire you on how to wear your makeup id you decide to embrace this trend.

I am always in a rush trying to get out in the week for a quick dinner with the hubbie or friends so I am always looking for easy ways to apply makeup and products that just work some magic. I love a smokey eye but unless its a Friday or Saturday night where I can take my time at my vanity table I need one product to create the smokey. If you haven’t gotten your hands on the Clarins Ombre matt cream to powder eyeshadow then this really is the business for a quick smokey eye.

Matt Lip

If you working on a budget and can’t quite justify buying different lipsticks but would love to have options you can turn your sheer lipstick to a matt lipstick in one easy step.

Make sure lips are hydrated and exfoliate lips if needed, you want to make sure lips are soft. Apply a few coats of lipstick to make sure you have the most colour you can get from your lippie. Then with fingers take a dab of translucent finishing powder and dab on your lips to get your matt effect.

Its as easy as that!

Have you tried to make your lipstick matt?

Being a makeup artist brings me great joy and for me its always so exciting to see the final picture. I loved this shoot because all the elements came together the model was amazing, the clothes were beautiful and the shots just came out so great. The main brief for the shoot was the lips they needed to be really defined, the rest was up to me.FASHION_Coats.indd

For me the key is always amazing skin because without flawless skin it doesn’t work. I made sure skin was prepped by cleansing and toning first and spritzing the skin with Mac Fix+ and then moisturising. For the foundation I used Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation its my favourite for darker skin tones.

The eyes needed to pop so a favourite trick of mine especially for darker skin tones is a light shimmery shade on the lip up to the crease and then in the crease working up to the brow bone a chocolate shade to create the definition. For the shimmer I used Urban Decay Naked Palette and for the definition I used Stila In the Light Palette. I filled brows with Smashbox Brow Tech but not to heavily as I still wanted them to look relatively natural and lashes were applied with a couple of coats of Maybelline Great Lash Mascara.

The lips were hydrated with Carmex before I applied any lipstick. I lined the lips with the amazing Mac Lip Pencil in Nightmoth, I applied quite a few layers to really create the definition and then applied the lip pencil on to the lips as well. For the stain effect in the centre of the lips I used from the Mac Fall 13 Trend Forecast Lips palette the shade Rich New Mood which is a beautiful berry shade and to get the stained lip I applied the lipstick with my fingers.

Will be posting the behind the scenes video once its live on my facebook page Makeupshahnaz.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish and Highlighting Perfector

As soon as I heard the Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish and Highlighting Perfector was coming out I was very excited as their makeup products are right at the top of my list and I wanted to see if they were anything like the YSL Touche Eclat pens especially as its almost R200 cheaper retailing at R245.

There are 5 shades available from 2 – 6 going from light to dark. They promise to be a multi tasking beauty tool that instantly corrects, highlights and illuminates the skin. The moisturising formula brings tired eyes out from the shadows, minimising the appearance of fine lines and dark circles. This pen helps conceal imperfections, accent brow bones and cheekbones and adds a touch of radiance to the skin.

They are definite pick me ups, as yesterday I looked exhausted all day. I came home and refreshed my foundation before going out and as you can see below I applied the pen under my eyes, along the brow bone, on my smile lines and around my mouth where I felt I need highlighting and concealing. (I already did the other side).

I then took my foundation brush and blended in as well as using fingers to leave my skin looking pretty flawless and beautifully highlighted. I actually don’t look tired and my fine lines that were visible in the day have been concealed. The product is very easy to blend and melts into skin so a big thumbs up for me especially as its such a great price in comparison the the YSL Touche Eclat. You can apply with absolute precision to the areas where you need, I didn’t apply to cheek bones as I had another highlighter on but that is another area where you can use the pen.

EA Pens 4

I love the Eizabeth Arden Flawless Finish and Highlighting Perfector packaging it comes in a beautiful gold pen which has a click to dispense the product so there is no wastage and makes it easy to apply. You can pop in your hand bag and apply when you feel you need a glow to your face. They are defintely staying in my kit but of course one will be in my pesonal stash. Get the Look: Elle Birthday Shoot

I always love to share the looks from shoots I have done that I really love so here is the latest instalment of Get The Look from the Elle SA 18th birthday editorial shoot. I was one of 2 of the makeup artists on the day and I got to work with these amazing models. The theme for the shoot was to give each girl a word that represented what the amagzine is all about and we had to create looks to match this.

Here are the key elements for each Get The Look and the word used to describe each girl:

Stylish: This look created for summer was all about making her look sophisticated so as to go with the bag and the amazing dress. For the eyes I wanted to create a really contoured look making it very structured like the dress. I used taupes and chocolates in the crease of the eye pulling up to the brow in the inner corner and on the outer corners created definition using a chocolate shadow and the Mac 263 angled brush and winged out at the top and bottom lash line. I filled in brows to make them more defined using my Smashbox BrowTech and for the lashes I used the Elizabeth Arden Colour Lash Enhancing Mascara to give beautiful lashes. For the skin I prepped with the Mac Fix + spray, cleansed and moisturised and to get flawless looking skin I used Nars Sheer Glow Foundation with the YSL Dare to Glow Highligter. Lips were kept nude but added Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream to create that gloss on the lips.

Spirited: I got to shoot my 2 fav twin sisters Aida and Eiva who were given the word spirited as they are such fun and full of energy girls. The outfits were tuxedo’s in a beautiful dark berry colour so I wanted the makeup to match. For the skin I prepped to give full hydration using the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream and then used the Smashbox HD Halo Liquid Foundation for a beautiful flawless finish. The eyes and lips matched the outfit so for the lids I applied the Clarins Eye Pencil in Plum on the top lash line and blended and in the waterline and then to add more intensity I used the new Chanel Les 4 Ombres in Tisse Camelia taking the intensity shade and blending over the liner and winging out. For the brows I used Mac Pencil in Lingering and the lashes Charlotte Tilbury Fat Lashes Mascara. Lips were a beautiful dark berry with a mixture of Mac Lip Pencil in Nightmoth and Rebel Lipstick.

Sexy: The gorgeous Charissa got the word sexy so make up was kept pretty nude but the fucus was all about contouring on the face and the eyes. For the skin I used Nars Sheer Glow to give her skin a beautiful dewy finish and concealed using the Mac Pro Correct and Conceal Palette to make sure that everything was flawless. For the eyes I spent a lot of time really contouring the eyes to create beautiful definition but no heaviness. So they shadow I used to blend into the crease and in the inner corner up to the brow bone was my favourite Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Sable is an amazing shade for contouring and then in the inner corner of the eye a pearl shimmer. I filled in brows as this was key for the look using the Smashbox BrowTech and for the lashes Maybelline The Falsies Mascara. I highlighted and using Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector  and for bronzing I used one of my all time favs the Nars Bronzer in Laguna. Lips were kept nude but the overall look was fresh and beautiful.

Colouful: For Aloud’s look because the clothes were colourful I kept the make up totally clean but added the colour to the nails using the fake nails from House of Holland by Elegant Touch in Geek which are very cool and quirky nails. The makeup I prepped the skin and for the foundation I used the Mac Matchmaster in no 10 with a mixture of YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat in B90 all over the skin to create an evened out flawless finish. I slightly contoured in the crease of the eye with Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Espresso and under the cheek bones to create definition and for the highlighter I used Estee Lauder Pure Colour in Topaz. I filled brows in using the Espresso shade swell and added lots of mascara. The lips were kept nude with a chocolate shade and Elizabeth Arden 8HR Cream over.

Emotional: This look for the beautiful Morgan was such a strong word so I wanted to keep the focus on the eyes. The under eye smokey eye is a massive trend and really gives a totally different dynamic to the makeup. The lids were kept very simple with a contour in the crease using Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Sable and under the eye I went for a cranberry shade using the Mac eyeshadow in Cranberry which is a big Autumn/Winter trend. I used a flat brush to apply on the bottom lash line and slightly winged it out. I filled in brows using the Mac Brow Pencil In Lingering and for lashes used the Charlotte Tilbury Fat Lashes Mascara. The skin was also a really key element to this look to create the drama so a flawless very dewy finish really made the eyes pop. I prepped skin using the Nars Luminous Moisture Cream and then applied the Benefit Oxygen Wow Hello Flawless foundation which is an unbelievable foundation and then contoured using the Nars bronzer in Laguna. Lips were kept nude and the nails is where we added more drama with the Inglot polish in 942 which is a beautiful deep blue shade.

So hope you enjoyed my latest Get The Look post and you are inspired to try so new makeup looks.
