Which Foundation To Choose?

I get asked pretty much on a daily basis what foundation to recommend and what’s my favourite. Quite a few of my favs are not available in SA like Nars Sheer Glow, Benefit Oxygen Wow Flawless and Georgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation which I am totally in love with and are great for every day and on photo shoots (LOVE)

However there is still a great selection here from budget to pricey here in SA. But remember when choosing foundation you need to match the foundation to your skin type whether its dry, normal, combination or oily. So here is my list of what I love to use on myself and when on a job:

Bourjois Healthy MixFoundation R169.95: I have blogged about this foundation and included in make up tutorials. I am a big fan of this foundation and have been using it on myself for quite a while. I always get such great comments on how amazing my skin looks and that I look like I am not wearing any make up. For me I like to apply with my fingers and really massage into the skin to get that natural finish, you can also build it up by using a foundation brush. Its vitamin rich and boosts radiance and always makes me look really fresh even though I am always knackered!!!!!

Smashbox HD Liquid Halo Foundation R370: Recently discovered I really do love this foundation. I have tested it out and blogged about it and on Monday filmed a tutorial using the foundation which will be out in the next few weeks. This foundation has light reflecting technology so it blurs out the imperfections and it feels and looks amazing on the skin. It is a sheer to medium coverage so for a more medium coverage press the foundation into the skin using a buffing brush I love using my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. I have added this foundation to my pro kit as I love that much.

Mac Mineralise Moisture SPF 15 R360: A big hit backstage for AW13 on some of the major shows and a big hit with the make up artists. This foundation is a great  for that dewy healthy glowing skin and even though it has SPF the foundation looks amazing with a flash camera and its one I have used a lot of times on a shoot and I absoloutely love how the skin looks. With a combination of powders this foundation creates an optical blurring effect that helps dimish imperfections and even out skintone. It has a light reflecting natural satin finish creating a beautiful healthy glowing skin (includes Shea Butter and Vitamin E0. Available online www.maccosmetics.co.za (YAY).

Mac Face and Body R310: This foundation is one of those foundations used by a lot of pro artists as its an amazing product for a sheer glowing finish on the face and great for that no make up make up look, but its also an amazing product to apply on the body for shoots to cheat the tan on the body. The foundation can be very sheer but you can build it up if applied with a buFfing brush. My how to create a healthy glow tutorial will be out in the next few weeks features this foundation. Its a key staple in my kit.

Bobbi Brown Stick R360: This stick foundation never let’s me down on a shoot especially when I am working with darker skin models. The stick foundation gives medium to full coverage and I use this foundation if the model has pigmentation, uneven skintone and bad skin combined with the creamy concealer. I always prep the skin even before I apply any foundation and once prepped this foundation glides onto the skin and gives a beautiful flawless finish in front of the camera. For the darker skin models I usually use 2 shades as I find they have the most uneven skin tone and the Bobbi Brown shades just really work. Its also won make up awards so you know its a goodie.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover Camouflage R415: I love this foundation for model’s that have bad skin or have pigmentation plus its great if your skin is a little bit oily. Best tip for using this foundation is to mix with a little moisturiser  as its quite thick and the finish is matt but with the moisturiser it still gives a glow to the skin. It really has great covearge and when in front of the camera under the flash the bad skin is camouflaged and is also a winner for under eyes concealing, when applying under the eyes tap the product in with your index finger.

YSL  Le Teint  Touche Eclat R540: A little bit more on the expensive side but a beautiful foundation for that luminous finish. YSL describes this foundation as “the illuminating magic light of touche eclat in a foundation”.  I like to use this foundation when the model has great skin and it just melts in when applied with a buffing brush and gives the feel of natural beautiful looking skin. The coverage is from sheer to medium coverage so when applying for more coverage press the foundation into the skin either using a beauty blender or a buffing brush so the product stays on the skin.

August-Essentials

This month has been a crazy blur of photoshoots, planning shoots and blogging and testing out amazing new products. Here is my August Essentials list of products I am loving this month and can’t get enough of:

Gosh All Day Moisture Serum: I was sent this to review a while ago but only started trying out this month. I used it on myself before applying the Mac BB cream and my skin looked amazing. So to put the serum to the test I have been using it on my models for some of my recent shoots and I love this product. It glides onto the skin and leaves the skin looking really fresh and feeling so smooth and once I apply the foundation the skin looks beautiful. The serum has two natural based elements Daymoist CLR and Skin Tightner ST leaving the skin fresh and tightened. LOVE

YSL Touch Eclat: An all time favourite and a classic product. I have been going to this product a lot this month to really highlight the face naturally. When my brief is a fresh flawless face then this is a product I reach for to highlight key areas like under the eyes, on the smile lines and around the mouth to really make the lipstick pop.

Mac Pro Conceal/Correct Palettes: I always used my Bobbi Brown concealers until I got my hands on these palettes. I LOVE these concealers as they blend into the skin beautifully and they don’t crease as much and I absoloutely love the texture of this product. What I also like is there are a few shades in the palette and so its easy to conceal under the eyes in a lighter shade but then on the face where needed I can buff in the concealer to blend in with foundation.

Mac Veluxe Pearl Fusion in Brownluxe: Its a limited edition product so you need to get a move on if you want to get your hands on a palette. I bought this shade as its colours that I will always use a lot. I love the texture and I love how the shadows blend in. Gorgeous.

Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate: I use this product on and off purely because I have so many contouring and highlighting products and because its expensive so don’t want to waste it. I love this palette the contour and the highlight are both creams. The highlight is absolutely beautiful for a glowing natural highlight with the element of gloss. Beauty tip apply the highlight on top of the cheek bone before applying foundation and then once the foundation is on go over the highlight area. The contour buffs in beautifully and is perfect for that dewy fresh look.

Hope you enjoyed my post. x

Touche Eclat and Mac Prep and Prime Highlighter

These are 2 amazing products that are key staples in my kit and that I definitely can’t live without. Most people think that these products are used as under eye concealers or eye brighteners but their real purpose is to brighten certain areas of the face. Unless you have no dark circles under you eyes you can get away with using the Touche Eclat under you eyes but in most cases you must use it to brighten certain areas of your face and still use a concealer.

Here is how to use the Touche Eclat:

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 19.50.40

Origionally the Touche Eclat only came in 1 shade now there are 7 which is great so more people can use the product. As well as an under eye brightener the Touche Eclat can be used in certain areas to lift your make up. The key areas for the Touche Eclat are as follows:

  • Along the bridge of the nose
  • Under the eyebrow
  • Inner corner of the eye
  • Outer corner of the eye
  • Along the smile crease line
  • Above the nose  on the forehead
  • Around the mouth to really make your lips pop when lipstick has been applied.

The Mac Prep and Prime Brighteners comes in 3 shades Bright Forecast, Light Boost and Radiance Rose.

These highlighters again are not in replacement of your concealer but to create definition after applying foundation and goes hand in hand with contouring. Use the highlighters in these areas to create beautiful definition:

  • Under the eyes in a triangle shape
  • Along the bridge of your nose
  • From the nose onto the foreahead into a triangle shape
  • Under your cheek bone
  • From under your nose to the top of your cupids bow
  • On your chin

Make sure once you apply these products with the bend you buff in the product to get the best effect. Will post a video soon on how to use.

Hope you enjoyed my post. x

I am absoloutely the YSL Pure Chromatic Eyeshadow quads. I have no 1 and 10 and am drfinitely going to invest in more colours. I have used the no 10 which is the green shades with a silver shade that I use by the tear duct on recent photoshoots.

I love the colours and the texture and the colours blend beautifully creating a stunning smokey eye plus it lasts for hours. The packaging and the product is really luxurious. I recently did a green smokey eye video using this palette so go have a look. As well as using the shadows dry you can also apply wet creating an even more dramatic eye. Same as using a pigment wet the brush and apply the shadow to the centre of the lid to really make the eye pop.

Here are some of the colours that are available:
